BORÅS – A research team at the University of Borås has developed a method of yielding product-specific, barcode-like ‘cryptotags’ for garments that, in principle, will provide greater traceability throughout the textiles supply chain.

The unique tags, which are printed directly onto a garment or other textile-based good, comprise tiny particles which cluster to form one-of-a-kind patterns that can be traced through from the preliminary stages of product development – the sourcing of fibres and yarns – right through to garment distribution.

Based on Blockchain technology, product-specific information is then recorded and stored securely online through a peer-to-peer network from which all relevant parties can rest assured of product authenticity; something which nowadays is in short supply given a growing number of brand counterfeiters.
