TSUKUBA – Researchers at the University of Tsukuba in Japan have developed a composite fibre from natural silk derived from bagworms and a synthetic conductive polymer.  

The academics believe the material could prove multi-functional both due to its robustness and ability to conduct electricity, which would open up potential doors for smart textile applications.

“We've taken the next step from previous research efforts by utilising the strongest known natural fibre – bagworm silk," explained Professor Hiromasa Goto.
