HOUSTON – Researchers at the University of Cambridge, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, ResInnova Labs and Ascend Performance Materials have found nylon fabrics, embedded with zinc ions, to be effective against viruses such as COVID-19 and the flu.

The collaborating entities used market available nylon to test the material’s potential when treated, which exhibited that it could kill upwards of 99 per cent of viral particles.

“Pathogen-free PPE does more than just cut down the risk of transmitting the virus,” Dr Vikram Gopal, Ascend’s chief technology officer, said. “By making PPE washable and reusable, you reduce the need for single-use products, keeping hundreds of millions of masks out of landfills.”
